Product Customizer User Guide
1. Accessing the App
After installation, open Product Customizer from the Apps section in your BigCommerce admin.
This is your main dashboard for creating and managing customizers.
2. Creating a Customizer
Step 1: Start a new customizer
- Click Create Customizer
- Enter a name (e.g., “T-Shirt Customizer” or “Mug Personalization”)
Step 2: Choose customization mode
Select one of the available modes:
- Text Only
- Image Only
- Text + Image
Step 3: Add a background image (optional)
Upload a background template such as a blank t-shirt, mug, ball, or any product surface.
Step 4: Configure sides/views
You can add multiple sides (e.g., front, back, left, right).
Each side can have:
- Its own customization area
- Optional price adjustments
Step 5: Customize text settings
- Choose from pre-installed fonts
- Upload additional fonts if needed
- Set allowed colors and upload custom color palettes
- Configure font size, alignment, and other options
Step 6: Configure image upload settings
- Allow customers to upload their own images
- Set allowed formats and size limits
- Enable/disable free positioning and resizing
Step 7: Save your customizer
Click Save to make your customizer available for assignment.
3. Assigning the Customizer to Products
Step 1: Select your customizer
Open the customizer from the list.
Step 2: Choose products
Click Assign to Products → browse or search your catalog.
Select one or more products to attach the customizer.
Step 3: Set Add to Cart behavior
Choose whether:
- Customers must customize the product before adding to cart
or - They can choose between customization and the standard product purchase
Save your assignment.
4. How Customers Use the Customizer on Your Storefront
When visiting a product page with an assigned customizer, customers can:
- Add text (if enabled)
- Upload an image (if enabled)
- Drag, resize, and position elements visually
- Switch between sides (front, back, etc.)
- See a real-time preview of their design
The preview continues through:
- Cart
- Checkout
- Order confirmation
- Customer account
This gives customers confidence in their design and reduces the chance of incorrect orders.
5. Viewing Customization Details in Orders
When a customer completes a purchase:
In the BigCommerce admin:
- Open the order
- View the product line item
- Click on the customization details
You will see:
- The final rendered preview
- The original uploaded images
- All text inputs
- Selected fonts, colors, and sides
These files are production-ready and can be used for printing, engraving, embroidery, sublimation, or manufacturing.
6. Managing Existing Customizers
You can edit any customizer from the dashboard.
Available actions include:
- Adding or removing sides
- Updating prices
- Uploading new fonts or colors
- Adjusting customization area sizes
- Changing assigned products
All changes update instantly.
7. Best Practices
- Upload high-quality background images for best preview results
- Limit font choices for cleaner UX
- Use transparent PNG backgrounds for apparel or product surfaces
- Test each customizer on both desktop and mobile
- Enable per-side pricing for complex products
